About Us
A History of Service to the People of Southington.
In the early 1870s, Southington was a small rural community with a population of less than 3,000. The town had no centralized water supply, and residents relied on wells, cisterns, and springs for their drinking water. However, as the town grew, so did the demand for a more reliable water source.
In 1884, a group of local businessmen formed the Southington Water Company and began to develop a plan to bring water to the town. They constructed a dam on the Quinnipiac River, about 10 miles from Southington, and laid a pipeline to bring water to a reservoir in town. The system was completed in 1887, and the Southington Water Company began selling water to the town's residents.
In 1895, the Connecticut General Assembly passed a law that allowed towns to acquire water companies through eminent domain. The town of Southington saw an opportunity to take control of its water supply and began negotiations with the water company.
After several years of legal wrangling, the town of Southington acquired the Southington Water Company in 1911 for the sum of $73,000. The town formed the Southington Water Department to manage the system, and the department has been providing water to the town's residents ever since.
Over the years, the Southington Water Department has expanded and modernized its facilities to meet the growing needs of the town. In the 1920s, the department constructed a new treatment plant to remove impurities from the water supply. In the 1950s and 60s, the department built several new reservoirs and pumping stations to ensure a reliable water supply for the town's growing population.
Today, the Southington Water Department serves a population of over 43,000 customers in the town of Southington and surrounding areas. The department's mission is to provide safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water to its customers while protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
